I've never trained Karate before, can I still join?
Of course! Our training is meant for people of all levels. We run our classes so that both our beginner and advanced students have something to gain at their respective skill levels.

Am I expected to attend every class on the schedule?
No, many of our instructors are students at the university too, so we understand if you cannot attend every single class. So don't feel bad if you miss a few classes because of midterms or assignments or anything else you're involved with. Of course, the more classes you attend the more prepared you'll be for grading -- and the more fun you'll have!

How is Karate different from other martial arts like Tae Kwon Do or Judo?
Karate focuses on blocks, strikes and body movement. Other martial arts focus on different aspects of hand to hand combat such as throws (judo) and joint manipulations and locks (jujitsu).
If you're interested in trying martial arts but you're not sure which one, then we suggest you attend a few classes of each. That way you can make an informed decision about which is right for you. Be on the look out for free try-it lessons that are held at the beginning of every term.

I've trained a different style of Karate, can I continue my training at this dojo?
Anyone with a background in martial arts is welcome to join our dojo.
However, we do ask those with previous experience at any level to begin their training with us as white belts. During your first grading, the instructors will assess an appropriate level for you within the guidelines and required knowledge for our style.
We've had many students from different styles receive advanced gradings and some are even now instructors.
