The University of Toronto Karate Club is hosting this year's Inter-University Karate Seminar. We look forward to the opportunity to meet and train with other Karate-ka, cross style boundaries and learn new techniques or training methods.

The University of Waterloo Karate and Jujitsu club is hosting the annual Inter-University Karate Seminar.
The seminar will consist of a training session (gasshuku) with instructors from across Ontario universities, as well as a friendly tournament.
Date: Saturday, February 23rd
Location: Columbia Ice Field (CIF) Athletic Centre, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario
Cost: $10/attendee
We invite all student clubs affiliated with a Canadian university that practices karate to participate.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at sckarate@uwaterloo.ca if you have questions or are interested in participating.
Drinks and refreshments will be provided.
Event is free for spectators.
Schedule of Events
1 pm - 4 pm: Gasshuku training sessions by various instructors from participating clubs
4 pm - 6 pm: Friendly Tournament
6:30 pm: Post-event dinner for all participating clubs
Visitor Parking Information:
There are both free and paid parking lot spots around the CIF Athletic Center:
We recommend two parking lots as outlined in the map above:
> Parking Lot X (across the street): Free Parking
> Parking Lot W (parking at CIF): $5 daily

Tournament details:
We will be holding a friendly tournament for students to showcase their best katas and spar with different people
Kata (forms)
Kata will be judged based on skill and consistency, while taking into consideration the competitor's karate style background.
For competitors in and above the Orange-Green belt categories, a competitor should not repeat katas.
Kumite (Sparring)
The kumite component of the tournament will follow World Karate Federation (WKF) rules.
1. One, two, or three points may be awarded depending on the technique as outlined in the image below:
2. Matches will last 1 minute and 30 seconds. Winner will be the one with the most points at the end of the match.
3. Scores will be given for techniques to the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen, side, and back.
4. Contact to the head, face, and neck are allowed IF AND ONLY IF contact is a light, controlled "touch" at most. Contact for these areas is not required for scoring. Techniques that show good form, control, and the potential to make significant contact will be given scores, even if no contact is made.
5. No contact to the throat is permitted. If contact is made, no point will be given and the competitor will be given a warning.
6. Throws and take downs are not permitted.
Equipment Requirements:
Competitors must supply their own sparring gear, and must consist of:
> mouth guard
> helmet
> gloves
> foot pads/shin guards
> groin guard (for males)
Post-event dinner

Time: 6:30 pm
Parking spaces are available at the plaza.
